044] How to Create Perpendicular Lines Along a Path in Global Mapper
Automatically generate perpendicular cross-section lines along any selected path or boundary for precise site analysis.
This tutorial covers the "Create Perpendicular Lines Spaced Along Selected Line/Area Feature(s)" tool in Global Mapper. You will learn how to set intervals and define perpendicular lengths, which is essential for professional road, river, and site cross-sectional studies.
Today, we will explore the "Create Perpendicular Lines Spaced Along Selected Line/Area Feature(s)" tool, which draws perpendicular lines at regular intervals along a selected feature
This feature is frequently used in drawings for cross-sectional analysis of business sites, roads, and rivers.
Preparing the Line and Area Features
First, draw an Area and a Line arbitrarily on the main screen.
After selecting both objects,
Creating Perpendicular Lines Along Selected Features
Select Advanced Feature Creation Options -> Create Perpendicular Lines Spaced Along Selected Line/Area Feature(s)...
Setting the Line Spacing Interval
A window to set the spacing will appear.
This is the same as what we learned in the previous lesson. There is nothing additional to explain here.
After choosing your desired options and clicking OK,
A window will appear to set the length of the lines perpendicular to the segment.
Defining the Perpendicular Line Length
Enter the desired length and click OK.
Next, you will be prompted to select the layer where the lines will be included.
Saving the Generated Lines to a Layer
You can include them in an existing layer or create a new one. I created a layer named "test." After clicking OK,
Final Result of the Generated Cross-Section Lines
Yes. Perpendicular lines have been generated along the selected segment at the set length.
This workflow is commonly used for road engineering, river cross-section extraction, utility corridor planning, and terrain sampling workflows in GIS environments.
By adjusting both the spacing interval and perpendicular line length, you can quickly generate consistent analysis sections for large linear features.
It is exactly the same as adding points, which we did in the last session. The only addition is setting the length of the perpendicular lines.
